Laura – return to gym after injury

Laura came to see Tom Boggon, one of our Sports Therapists here at the Hub, after an unfortunate gym incident left her with both a rotator cuff tear and whiplash. What started as a painful, frustrating setback soon began to affect her confidence in the gym, especially when it came to lifting weights.

Tom carried out a thorough assessment and set out a clear plan. Early sessions focused on reducing pain and improving mobility through hands-on treatment, soft tissue therapy, and gentle joint mobilisation. Once her symptoms began to settle, Tom introduced progressive rehab exercises to rebuild her strength and control. These included banded shoulder rotations, controlled overhead presses, and scapular stability drills to restore function and protect the joint.

For her whiplash symptoms, Tom guided her through neck mobility work, deep neck flexor strengthening, and posture retraining – helping to ease stiffness and build resilience. Alongside this, he provided practical advice on load management, warm-ups, and exercise technique to make sure Laura could return safely to the movements she loves.

Fast forward, and Laura is back in the gym with an adjusted training plan whilst she continues to work her way back to full strength. The lesson here is that rehabilitating an injury need not stop your training. Instead, it is a way of continuing what you need and love, whilst working with knowledge and support as your body heals.
