Lucy – persistent knee pain to HYROX!
15 May 2026A little over a year ago, Lucy first visited the Hub to see Tom, one of our senior sports therapists and running specialists. At the time, she had been struggling with persistent knee pain that had gradually begun to limit her running and gym work. What had started as a mild ache after longer runs or during squatting had developed into a more consistent discomfort, making training frustrating and unpredictable.
During her initial appointment, Tom carried out a detailed assessment, looking not only at Lucy’s knee but also at how she moved and loaded through her hips, ankles and running mechanics. The findings suggested that even though her knee pain may have started from and injury back in 2021, the recurring pain was linked more to how her body was coping with the demands of regular training after such an injury.
Lucy began a structured plan combining hands-on treatment with progressive rehabilitation and practical guidance around her training. Early sessions focused on settling the irritation around the knee while building strength and control through the surrounding muscles. Alongside this, Tom helped Lucy gradually adapt her running load and technique so that she could continue training while allowing the knee to recover.
As the knee improved, Lucy continued to check in with Tom to manage the occasional aches and pains that come with staying active and training regularly. These sessions helped address small issues early and keep her training consistent rather than having to stop and start. Over time, Lucy built confidence in both her strength and her running, allowing her to gradually increase her workload.
Now, Lucy is in a strong position and running comfortably again. With her knee pain settled and her overall strength much improved, she has set her sights on a new challenge and is currently working towards competing in a HYROX event.
Lucy’s story highlights how persistent pain can often improve with the right combination of assessment, treatment and gradual progression. By addressing the underlying factors and building resilience over time, it’s possible not only to return to activity but to move forward with new goals.
