Ryan – recovery from a major knee injury
15 June 2026Several months ago, Ryan first came to the Hub to see Abbie following a significant knee injury. Investigations revealed extensive damage, including an almost complete rupture of both the ACL and PCL, an avulsion fracture, a grade two MCL sprain, damage around the medial meniscus, changes in the positioning of the femoral patella, and widespread soft tissue injury. Unsurprisingly, the knee felt unstable, painful and difficult to trust during everyday movements.
Following a detailed assessment, Abbie put together a structured rehabilitation plan focused on gradually restoring strength, stability and confidence through the knee. Early stages of rehab concentrated on reducing pain and swelling, improving movement, and helping Ryan regain basic control around the joint. Hands-on treatment, including soft tissue massage work, was also used alongside rehabilitation to help manage symptoms and reduce tension through the surrounding muscles.
As symptoms began to settle, Ryan progressed into more challenging rehabilitation drills designed to improve balance, coordination and strength through the entire lower limb. Sessions focused not only on the knee itself but also on building control through the hips, glutes and ankles to better support movement and stability. Consistency became a major part of the process, with regular rehab work both in clinic and independently helping to build momentum over time.
Progress has been steady and hard-earned. Over the months, Ryan has shown a massive improvement in strength, movement and confidence compared to where he started. Tasks and exercises that initially felt difficult or uncomfortable have gradually become far more manageable, allowing him to tolerate more activity with fewer setbacks.
At present, Ryan has reached a slight pause in the process, as his consultant is not keen to proceed with surgery just yet. Alongside this, Ryan is also preparing for a major life event, with twins due to arrive any day now. While rehabilitation may look slightly different over the coming months, he remains committed to maintaining the progress he has worked so hard to achieve so far.
Ryan’s case highlights the importance of structured rehabilitation, patience and consistency following complex knee injuries. Even with significant damage, gradual progression and ongoing commitment can make a substantial difference to both symptoms and overall function.
